Worldcoin, a project co-founded by Sam Altman, has experienced a recent price pump, partly due to recent discussions about his departure from OpenAI and his involvement with Microsoft. Altman, a tech professional who previously served as the CEO of OpenAI, was let go a couple of days ago, sparking curiosity about his plans and how they might impact his ongoing projects, including Worldcoin.
However, Microsoft appears to have persuaded Sam Altman to lead a highly advanced AI research team. As a result, the price of Worldcoin has also seen an increase.
Microsoft’s Satya Nadella Tweeted Sam’s Introduction to Microsoft
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was the first to mention Sam’s potential role at Microsoft on X, a popular social media platform. He tweeted, ‘We’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, along with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team.’ This tweet introduced Sam Altman and Greg Brockman as part of Mircosoft, the latter being a founding member of OpenAI who departed the company following Sam’s exit.
It was also confirmed that Sam would continue leading Tools for Humanity, the development arm behind Worldcoin. This project, introduced earlier this year, was established as a global financial network and identity for everyone.
The Price of Worldcoin Rose Right After a Correction
The news of Sam Altman leaving OpenAI caused the price of Worldcoin to plummet a few days ago, with the token dropping from being worth more than $2.4 to less than $1.8 within a day. However, these new developments seem to have sparked more positive sentiments within the ecosystem, driving the price of WLD back up to the $2.3 range.
At the time of writing, the token is trading at around $2.30, with a market cap of more than $267 million. It has also experienced a significant increase in traded volume, currently sitting at about $325 million, over 7% higher than yesterday.
Will Sam Altman Return to OpenAI?
While Twitch Co-Founder Emmett Shear has been appointed as the interim CEO of OpenAI, speculation about Sam’s potential return to OpenAI in the foreseeable future has been rife. The company’s Chief Strategy Officer, Jason Kwon, apparently informed employees that the company would be optimistic about Altman returning. However, the director of OpenAI’s board, Ilya Sutskever, mentioned that Sam Altman won’t return as CEO of OpenAI, despite efforts by the company’s executives to bring him back.
Though Sam’s return to OpenAI might not be assured, it is likely that his involvement in the AI industry, as well as his association with Worldcoin, will remain strong. This prospect may come as a relief to investors and supporters of Worldcoin.
