Opera Launches Beta Browser For Android With Cryptocurrency Wallet Built In

Web browser maker Opera hopes the mobile web browser will help with cryptocurrency adoption.

  • Web browser company Opera has released a beta version of a new Android web browser with a built-in cryptocurrency wallet. Currently, those who wish to participate must request permission to join the private test run.

Charles Hamel, Opera’s crypto product lead, commented, “Our hope is that this will accelerate the transition of cryptocurrencies from speculation and investment to being used for actual payments and transactions in our users’ daily lives.”

According to the release, the browser makes it possible to use the crypto wallet without any additional PINs or passwords; the browser “instead relies on Android’s secure system lock to sign transactions from the Crypto Wallet.”

Originally a Norwegian company, Opera was sold to a Chinese consortium in 2016. The company, which currently only controls a small share of the market, announced last month it had filed initial public offering papers with SEC. The new wallet browser is not the first crypto-related feature Opera has introduced. In January, it announced that anti-cryptojacking features had been added to its mobile and desktop browsers.
