Wikileaks announced that its merchandise arm WikiLeaks Shop’s account with cruptocurrency exchange Coinbase has been blocked, citing violation of terms of service. In response, the international anonymous publishing non profit has called for a global blockade of the exchange.
WikiLeaks Shop tweeted that Coinbase has blocked the official @WikiLeaks shop from its platform without notice or explanation, and that one can continue to donate #Bitcoin to WikiLeaks.
Wikileaks shop sells items including clothing, accessories, phone cases, stickers, posters, books, as well as Cryptokitties. The proceeds from the shop go to WikiLeaks operations. The customers can make donations in cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, and Ethereum, among others.
Meanwhile Coinbase said the move is part of its primary goal to make digital currency safe and secure for its customers, as a regulated Money Services Business under Financial Crimes Enforcement Network or Fincen. It is obligated to implement regulatory compliance mechanisms, Coinbase added.
Bitcoin is said to have helped WikiLeaks immensely when the firm was unable to use traditional banking systems due to banking embargo, giving the firm a 50,000 percent return. WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange reportedly thanked the US government recently for forcing the organization to rely on Bitcoin due to the embargo.
